We are a group of individuals trying to understand our history better and to have experts talk to you about the stories of this traditionally rich trading port town of Mangalore.

Hidden in a forgotten corner of Bolar, beneath layers of dust and time, a tombstone from 1629 whispers fragments of history.
Some stories are lost to time. Others are waiting to be found.

Archiving histories of science from Mangalore

It's been four months since we (along with @labhopping) began working on our very first archiving project, thanks to a grant we won from @archives_ncbs
Our first steps were the most exciting - material survey! Our team are no strangers to spending endless hours browsing through archival material, but this was the first time we were dealing with history of science.
We found some absolute gems, and we look forward to sharing them with you later this year. We are working with St Aloysius University on archiving and digitising some of their unique publications which date back to the late 1800s! We are also archiving the personal collection of a very inspirational nonagenarian priest-scientist (you read that right!) from the college, who is not only known for his incredible work in botany, but also for opening the historically men's college up to girls and women.
We have also surveyed magazines from St Agnes College, which has played an instrumental role in women's education for the region.

8. Mervin wraps the most at-risk magazines in cotton kora cloth pigmented with turmeric--a cost-effective way to keep insects away.
9. The oldest magazines wrapped in cotton kora cloth inside their original cabinet with pouches of silica to absorb the humidity
10. The century-old magazines were moved to a dehumidifying cabinet we were able to purchase for St Aloysius thanks to the grant. It's the best we can do for the crumbling magazines in this epic humidity.

About last weekend...
☀️Ever since summer holidays began, we’ve been plotting to conduct a couple of fun heritage-themed workshops for children. We managed to make it happen on one beautiful rainy weekend at @tlc.art.cafe 🌧️
The moment @deepikaupadhyaya introduced us to @neelihakki we had an inkling that we had found our dream resource-person for a creative writing workshop
✍🏾Over the last Saturday and Sunday, Sneha won over the young participants with her easy, warm and good-humoured personality easing them out if their comfort shells, prodding them to the wondrous world of juicy mangoes, hungry squirrels, and local writers and poets from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi & Kasargod 📖
🗺️Her sessions were followed by a map-making workshop by CHC’s own @plansforahome and @njinxs
📜Armed with scrolls and scrolls of maps across history, a slew of games and even a treasure hunt, they proceeded to awaken several keen-eyed cartographers hiding within.
🌈We all went back home exhausted and content.
