Bunder History walk
A walk through the locality of Bunder which is filled with remnants of Mangalore's historical status as a prominent port town.
Mangalore used to be a traditional port town, with strong trade links with Arab countries. This is evident from the cultural and religious mish-mash that Mangalore is. Various dynasties ruled here - up to the 12th Century, it was the local rulers, followed by the Vijayanagara Kingdom. The Portuguese arrived in the 15th century and established themselves as trading giants here. They also established Mangalore's first fort. The Nayakas ruled over the region, too. The queen of Ullala was a prominent queen who famously defeated the Portuguese at war in the 15th century.
In the 18th century, Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan raised Mangalore's trading and sea capabilities. Remnants of Haider's fort are still visible, as we point out during our heritage walk. At the fag end of the 18th century, the East India Company which was growing stronger throughout the country, defeated Tipu in the War of Mysore. They took over Mangalore in 1799.
Since then, the British ruled Mangalore. There was a small farmer's uprising in 1834-37 in the Sullia region, some places in Mangalore were demolished, and prisoners were freed - but besides this, the British remained more-or-less unchallenged till independence.
During our Bunder heritage walk, our guides will walk you through streets and institutions which prominently features through these histories.
